Illinois Shakespeare Festival
|
The Illinois Shakespeare Festival is the recipient of an “Educating
Illinois in Action” honor. The honor, presented by the Educating
Illinois coordinating team, recognizes individuals, offices or
programs that exemplify the goals and strategies of the
Educating Illinois 2008-2014 strategic plan. |
| The Illinois Shakespeare Festival has been associated with Illinois State University for more than 30 years and has gained a nationwide reputation for creative excellence. As a professional theatre company, the Festival provides a unique opportunity for the pursuit of learning and scholarship. Students earn course credit in acting, design, construction and management while preparing a resume for future careers. |
|
Through a partnership with the Actor’s Equity Association, students
have the chance to work one-on-one and in small groups with
theatre professionals. This emphasis on individualized attention
helps students hone their skills and develop valuable
professional contacts. The Festival provides a valuable public
opportunity for partnerships between the University and
community businesses and organizations. The Festival’s outreach
programs go into schools and attract local families to the plays
staged at the Theatre at Ewing during the summer months. |
|
Diversity has long been an integral part of the Festival’s mission,
not only in hiring and recruiting, but also in its production
program. It has received national acclaim for the production of
“Pericles” with a deaf actor in the lead role and with special
shadow- signing performances for deaf audiences, and its
production of “The Merchant of Venice,” which explored issues of
anti-Semitism. The Festival also promotes civic engagement
through the timeless truths found in the works of William
Shakespeare and other playwrights. Every show is an opportunity
for students, faculty, staff and the community to experience the
comedy, tragedy and wisdom of Shakespeare’s words through the
lens of modern society. |
