Values in Practice

Diversity

Encouraging community and an informed respect for all differences among students, faculty, and staff by fostering an inclusive environment that prepares students to be engaged participants in global society.

Learning that everyone is different and enjoying those differences is how Linda Smith, Admissions, implements diversity into her everyday life. "Diversity comes in so many different forms," said Smith. "Differences vary in cultures, communication as well as backgrounds. I try to take time and listen when working with students as well as parents."

Recruiting students and helping them apply to the University is an overview of what Smith does on a daily basis but it becomes much more detailed when the element of diversity is considered especially when working with international students. As an admissions counselor, Smith makes sure that she pays attention to diversity issues. For example, she said she worked with a couple from India that required sensitivity to their culture. "In this particular situation, the woman brought in her husband for me to talk to," explained Smith. "You talk to the husband, not the woman, because he is the negotiator in their culture."

Many students fill out applications from guidance counselors in high school encouraging them to continue their education. Smith said parents, especially of first generation students, sometimes do not understand the process and need further explanation. "Many parents don’t know what a FASFA form is and how to fill it out or why their tax information is needed," Smith said. "Sometimes the student will need you to talk to their parents on why they have to do certain things." In one particular situation Smith said she talked to the parents at the student’s request. The parents wanted the student to attend a local community college. Smith said she explained the benefits and experiences the student gains at a four year university. She took the time to walk them through the process and each form required. "It doesn’t seem difficult when you understand where people are coming from," said Smith. "We try to offer the one-on-one with students when needed and make them feel that we are here and have time for them." Smith said that she believes the Admissions Office is where Illinois State’s slogan "A large institution with a small school feel begins."

Smith said she sometimes experiences a de’ja vu in her job as an admissions counselor. She is from a small, rural town that, at the time, consisted of 700 in population. She said when she decided to look into attending Illinois State her family was experiencing a lot of issues. She said the admissions counselor took time and offered ways to obtain a scholarship for her to attend the University. Smith said she knew when she left his office that she wanted to attend Illinois State. "He was so kind and so willing to help. He made such a great impression on me," said Smith. "Now that I’m in the same position, it’s great knowing you can have a small part of a person's life."
